I joined FABI in 2021 to pursue my BSc honours degree in Genetics under the supervision of Dr Markus Wilken. My honours research investigated the mating strategies of species within the genus Sclerotinia, with a particular focus on the mating-type (MAT) locus that governs sexual compatibility.
My MSc dissertation, entitled “Reconsidering the taxonomy of Sclerotinia with special reference to S. sclerotiorum”, was completed under the supervision of Dr Markus Wilken, Prof Cobus Visagie, and Prof Martin Coetzee. This project explored the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Sclerotinia and included sequencing the nearly 190-year-old type specimen of S. sclerotiorum to establish a robust taxonomic reference.
Currently, I am a second-year PhD candidate in the Grain Research Programme. My doctoral research continues to focus on Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, using population genomics and transcriptomics to investigate its population structure, the dynamics of transposable elements, and the molecular basis of pathogenicity across global and South African populations.
