Abstract
Groundnuts in South Africa were surveyed for viruses from 1990 to 1997 in the groundnut production areas of the Northern, North-West, Free State, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga Provinces. Viruses most commonly found were tomato spotted wilt tospovirus, groundnut ringspot tospovirus, peanut mottle potyvirus and the groundnut rosette disease viral complex. Isolated occurrences of other viruses include tobacco streak ilarvirus, bean yellow mosaic potyvirus and the newly characterized peanut chlorotic blotch potyvirus
