Abstract

The strain identity of 10 soybean mosaic potyvirus (SbMV) isolates from soyabean and one isolate from lupins (<i>Lupinus albus</i>) from the Transvaal, South Africa were determined. The soyabean isolates all constituted a symptom variant of the G1 strain and the SbMV-H31 isolate from lupins was also shown to belong to the SbMV-G1 strain group, albeit as a slight symptom variant. The host range and symptomatology, cytopathology, aphid transmission, particle morphology and length distribution and coat protein molecular mass of SbMV-86/20, one of the soyabean isolates, were similar to that of SbMV-H31. The 2 isolates were serologically identical
