I am a PhD candidate, Plant pathologist, and Agricultural Scientist in training. I hold a Master’s degree in Plant Pathology (2020) and joined FABI in 2022 as one of the Phytosanitation and Biosecurity Interns (Feb 2022 – Jan 2023). Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Plant Virology, focusing on wheat stripe mosaic virus, a newly identified Benyvirus in South Africa.
My research experience encompasses plant disease diagnostics, mycotoxin analysis and food safety, insect and nematode rearing, and insect biocontrol. Below is a summary of my previous research:
Master’s Research – Investigated the natural occurrence of mycotoxins and mycotoxin-producing fungi (Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Aspergillus spp.) in cowpea leaves from smallholder farms. Additionally, I explored the phytotoxic effects and systemic transmission of Fusarium mycotoxins.
Honours Research – Evaluated the microbiological quality of irrigation water used on baby spinach leaves for fresh salads, isolating key foodborne pathogens (Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus).
I have over 5 year's experience in phytopathology, biosecurity, and agricultural research. I am passionate about advancing plant health, food safety, and sustainable agriculture for South Africa.
